- The IP protocol is a network layer protocol.
- Hence, its main function is to provide routing for packets.
- The IP header must therefore specify at least the addresses of sender and
receiver.
- Additionally, IP makes provisions for
- breaking a packet into smaller pieces (fragmentation),
- discarding ``old'' packets.
