• The IP protocol is a network layer protocol.
• Hence, its main function is to provide routing for packets.
• The IP header must therefore specify at least the addresses of sender and receiver.
• Additionally, IP makes provisions for
  • breaking a packet into smaller pieces (fragmentation),
  • discarding ``old'' packets.
