- The received signal looks considerably different than the transmitted
  signal.
- The additive noise makes it difficult to recognize the waveform of the
  transmitted signal.
- Good news: We don't need to recover the transmitted waveform.
- It is sufficient to determine if a positive or negative pulse was
  transmitted in each bit period.
