Arithmetic/Logic Operations

• Typically, an ALU has relatively few available operations.
• Operations include:
  • addition
  • subtraction
  • bitwise logical operations
  • shifting left or right (multiply/divide by power of 2)
• More complex operations can be constructed from these elementary operations.
• The number of bits in the operands is an important figure of merit for a CPU.
